Cassio Francis
Black Belt World Champion

Cassio Francis, affectionately known in the jiu-jitsu world as Cassão, was born on June 18, 1983, in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Drawn to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in his teenage years, Cassio found inspiration in the early UFCs, watching Royce Gracie overcome much larger opponents through technique and leverage. As a skinny kid, he saw himself in the Gracies—proof that skill could triumph over size. At 19, he finally stepped onto the mats under the legendary Vinícius “Draculino” Magalhães, whose mentorship would shape his journey for decades to come.

Cassio earned every belt under Draculino’s guidance, culminating in his black belt on December 21, 2010—a testament to their enduring student-mentor bond and Cassio’s dedication to the art.

A promising competitive career was nearly cut short in 2011 when doctors diagnosed him with three herniated discs in his lower back (L3–L4, L4–L5, and L5–S1), the result of years of intense weightlifting. Two physicians told him he’d never compete again.

Cassio refused to accept that fate. He took two years off from competition, focusing entirely on healing—rebuilding his body, rethinking his training, and returning with purpose. By late 2013, he was back on the international circuit, quickly reestablishing himself as a dominant force in the heavyweight division and earning major podium finishes.

Today, Cassio Francis is not only a formidable black belt and competitor, but a revered professor at Trein Club Fort Bend, located in Sugar Land, Houston TX. With a presence that commands both respect and warmth, he guides the next generation of athletes with the same resilience and technical excellence that brought him back from the brink.

Cassio’s story is more than one of success—it’s one of perseverance, evolution, and belief. At Trein Club Fort Bend, Professor Cassão represents the soul of jiu-jitsu: that even the greatest setbacks can become the foundation of your greatest comeback.
